NSW refreshes its EV Strategy

The NSW Government has released a refreshed Electric Vehicle (EV) Strategy, moving the focus away from early-adopter rebates and toward filling the gaps that are stopping people from buying an EV.

NSW EV sales have grown more than ten-fold since 2020, and the state now leads the country for both EVs on the road and fast chargers installed. The government has invested more than $330 million into EV infrastructure and now looks to commit another $100 million over the coming years address the following priorities:

  1. Build a world-class public charging network
  2. Support the electrification of trucks
  3. Create a skilled workforce to maintain EVs

How these priorities are going to be achieved

Filling charging blackspots

A major priority of the 2026 refresh is completing a world class public charging network. NSW will continue rolling out fast chargers at least every 100 kilometres on major highways and every 5 kilometres along commuter corridors, with a new emphasis on regional and remote blackspots. More kerbside chargers will be co-funded to support households without off street parking, and councils will receive additional planning support.

Kick-starting the shift to electric trucks

With trucks contributing 26% of NSW road transport emissions, the government has expanded the EV fleets incentive program to include vans, utes and trucks. This supports logistics and delivery operators facing high diesel costs and helps accelerate the transition of the sector.

Training an EV workforce

To ensure safe and accessible servicing, the strategy will fund EV upskilling for mechanics in NSW. This supports the nationally recognised Battery Electric Vehicle Inspection and Servicing skill set and helps address emerging skills shortages identified by the automotive industry.

Clearer information for households and businesses

The government will continue investing in consumer information programs, including EV test drive days, the Vehicle Emissions Star Rating tool and online resources. These programs aim to improve confidence and help drivers compare emissions, running costs and available EV models.

Aligning with wider net-zero policy

The refreshed strategy ties closely to broader NSW policies, including the Consumer Energy Strategy and the state’s legislated emissions reduction targets of 50% by 2030, 70% by 2035 and net zero by 2050. Planned reforms include a right to install EV chargers in strata properties and future incentives for smart and bidirectional charging that can help stabilise the electricity grid.
